Dr. Kane Walker, a chiropractor whose practice is in Warrnambool, addressed the Rotary Dinner meeting on 29th Ocober

Dr Walker attended the meeting along with partner and receptionist, Emma.  Kane has recently taken over Wayne Jennings’s practice in Warrnambool after moving from Rockhampton in Queensland.

He explained how he got to be a chiropractor after developing tinnitus as a teenager in Year 9.  After exhaustive tests, and treatments by GPs and neurologists, he was eventually cured by the intervention of a chiropractor who worked on treating the whole nervous system that is carried by the skeleton.  This inspired him to follow a career in this profession.

Kane studied to be a chiropractor at Macquarie University which is a 5-year course today.  Although chiropractic has been around for 113 years the character of the practice has changed dramatically due to research.

He explained that chiropractors work on maintenance of a person’s well-being and pointed out that under the current medical regime, where the cost of treatment (versus maintenance) is becoming a financial burden on the nation.  If current trends continue our health budget would reach catastrophic amounts and severely affect the nation in around 20 years as the current method of treatment of health care is failing.

Kane outlined that the 3 KEYS to good health are:

1.       Diet

2.       Exercise (3 hrs walking per week minimum)

3.       Posture – the area of his expertise

Studies have shown that the bigger the thoracic curve of the spine, the shorter the life span.  Some curvature is genetic and due to scoliosis whilst most is related to head carriage as the curve in the neck takes all the stress and weight of the carrying the head.  The natural curvature of the neck is required - like a church arch where there is strength in the curve.  As a consequence of improper neck curvature the body counter-balances this to counteract faults elsewhere in the spine.

Dr. Kane WalkerHe recommended that we do not sit for more than 45 minutes at a time and should intersperse sitting with an occasional walk around to help strengthen the skeletal muscles.

He believes that good health is really a state of optimal physical, spiritual, and mental well-being and therefore, as humans, we need to spend more time and money on “wellness” – maintenance rather than treatment is the key.

We should all value our health and be prepared to spend to keep our bodies in good shape in the same way we pay to service our cars regularly to avoid catastrophic failures.

John Clue, who is a client of Dr. Walker, thanked him for taking the time to talk to us and for his informative talk.  He presented Kane with a Rotary pen.
