The opening of the Port Fairy lighthouse on Griffiths Island over Easter was a great fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Port Fairy. The lighthouse was open to the public on Saturday and Sunday and raised $1,363 for the Club which will be put towards community projects.
Rotary Club members opened the lighthouse from 10am to around 5pm on each day and the exercise proved very popular with the visiting public who braved the weather, especially on Sunday, to take the 40 something steps to view from the lighthouse's viewing platform.
There was a steady stream of visitors to the lighthouse on both days, many of whom were visitors to Port Fairy for the Easter weekend. All children who climbed the lighthouse received a special certificate to mark the occasion and the Rotary Club gave out more than 200 certificates over the two days.
The Rotary Club is one of a number of local, community organisations that are allowed to open the lighthouse on special weekends and the interest in the historic lighthouse on the Island never wains as indicated by the queues!
