As part of the Peter's Project initiative to raise funds from local communities in support of the establishment of a cancer treatment centre in Warrnambool, the Rotary Club of Port Fairy, like many local organisations in SW Victoria, have been busy fundraising for this very worthy cause.  Following pledges from the Federal and State governments to fund the project, the call to raise $1M from the local community is well on the way to meeting its target due to the efforts of Rotary Clubs, Lions Clubs and many other community groups in the region.

At its meeting on 17th February. the Club presented a cheque for over $5,768 to Peter's Project coordinator, Vicki Jellie.

The funds presented to Peter's Project were raised from two major fundraising events conducted by the club

  1. The Club's annual Painting Raffle raised over $1,500 from the raffle of a painting by local artist, Wilma Preston.
  2. A fundraiser held at the Reardon Theatre, with advanced screenings of the ABC drama, Broken Shore (filmed in SW Victoria) raised over $4,000 towards Peter's Project.

Vicki Jellie attended the meeting to receive the cheque on behalf of Peter's Project and also gave a brief overview of the initiative to raise funds for a cancer treatment centre.  She explained that her role is not necessarily one of being a fundraiser but was a role where she facilitated the project and the lobbying process that eventually secure government and community support.

Wilma Preston and her husband, Norm, we also guests of the club to acknowledge the contribution Wilma makes each in donating a painting for the summer raffle.

Andi Besford and Helen Crosier, representing the Reardon Theatre Group that secured the rights to screen Broken Shore at the theatre.  The showing of the film was granted, free of charge, by the ABC.  Andi Besford gave an inspiring speech outlining how the community can come together with service clubs like Rotary and Lions do good things.
