Do you know about the Rotary Rule unofficially called Rule of 85?

The “Rule of 85” is the general unofficial term used to refer to a specific type of excused absence specified in Article 9, Section 3(b) of the standard club constitution.

It states that a member may request to be excused from attendance requirements if:

  • They are at least 65 years of age.
  • The sum of their age and their years of service in Rotary is at least 85.
In the Rotary Club of Port Fairy, we have (according to our ClubRunner records) only one member that qualifies and that is Colwyn Martin who has a combined sum of some 120 years!

Needless to say, Col hardly needs to be excused from our Rotary meetings as he is one of our best attenders and with the make-ups he earns he sails pretty close to 100% attendance in most years.  In fact, during last year from July 2011 to June 2012 he scored 100%.  Well done Col!

I suspect that a few of our other, older and long standing members may also qualify but, as indicated in a previous article, some members do not have their proper year of birth recorded in their ClubRunner profile.  If you think you are eligible under the "Rule of 85" calculation then please ensure that your birth year is recorded and that your year of joining Rotary is accurate.  If you need help to amend your ClubRunner profile then please contact Secretary, Harry Bracegirdle.
